Acc basketball updated preseason rankings for 2018-19 au university

The ACC has consistently been the best conference in college basketball since the 16-team big east broke up. Last year was another banner year as they tied the conference record with nine NCAA tournament teams and sent two (duke, florida state) to the elite eight. University of us A number of high-profile players are now gone as the conference had six players taken in the first 21 overall picks in the NBA draft, but as we know in the ACC, teams simply reload.

That distinction, once again, belongs to duke, who is welcoming in the nation’s top recruiting class and have legitimate national championship aspirations despite losing all five starters. Of course, their rivals on tobacco road also have title aspirations as north carolina has three starters returning (headlined by luke maye) and the nation’s no. 3 overall recruit in nassir little.

These three teams are expected to steal headlines all season long, but virtually every team in the conference has expectations of making the NCAA tournament. How will all of those teams stack up against each other? Here are our ACC basketball preseason projections for the 2018-19 season!

Pitt’s decision to part with former head coach jamie dixon and bring in kevin stallings has decimated this proud program in just a couple of years. Now, jeff capel is taking the reins and inheriting a roster that went 8-24 last season and was winless in conference play.

“with those three guys, I don’t think we ever had a chance of keeping them,” capel said via jerry dipaola of the pittsburgh tribune-review, “luther and carr, the reality of it is those guys had been talking to people, or people in their circle had been talking to other schools. Look, I know how this world works. Washington university football schedule when there’s chaos and uncertainty, other people really start inserting themselves. The recruiting process from other schools had already started happening.”

The 2018-19 season will mark a fresh start for a louisville program that is coming off of two major scandals, one involving strippers (that cost the school the 2013 title) and the other involving the FBI – neither of which you want to have around your program.

Former xavier head coach chris mack is now taking over the reins following what was essentially a lost year for the cardinals due to the (still ongoing) FBI investigation, and while many think it will be a rebuilding process in louisville, I think the cardinals will be a formidable team rather quickly.

Talent was never the issue and louisville still has a good deal of it. American college greece V.J. King is a former five-star recruit who will need to become a go-to guy right away, while samford grad transfer christen cunningham – that program’s all-time assist leader – is expected to take over at point guard. UConn transfer steven enoch and talented seven-footer malik williams are expected to start down low.

The cardinals need to see that talent develop and reach its full potential, something that never really happened during the later years of former head coach rick pitino’s tenure and certainly wasn’t going to happen under dave padgett. Mack has a track record for getting the most out of his players and, if he can do that at louisville, this may be too low for this team.

Despite losing all five starters from last year’s team, I have duke as the preseason no. 1 team in the country. Their incoming recruiting class features four top 10 players (R.J. Barrett, cameron reddish, zion williamson, and tre jones) and I think this group can become one of the most iconic classes in the sport’s history.

Williamson is already a national sensation with his high-flying dunks and will likely be a small-ball four for the blue devils, which will create all kinds of mismatches because of his athleticism. Jones is an excellent distributor and defender, both of which are perfect for this team, and reddish is a smooth, lengthy scorer with vision and a reliable jump shot – and has drawn comparisons to tracy mcgrady.

That said, barrett, the top player in the 2018 class and projected no. 1 pick in the 2019 NBA draft, is the guy who will be the most special. American college athens he’s a gifted scorer who excels at attacking the rim and has shown an improved three-point shooting stroke. Barrett is also a proven winner, leading canada to the U19 world cup gold medal (including a semifinal victory over the USA) and his high school, montverde academy, to a national championship this past season.

I think barrett is as good as any top prospect we’ve seen in recent years and will be duke’s leader from day one. Those four project to start alongside junior center marques bolden, who will provide experience with returners alex O’connell, jordan goldwire, and javin delaurier off the bench. Four-star forward joey baker (no. 33 overall recruit) should also contribute some as a shooter off the bench.
