MORGANTOWN – when the leaders at marshall university and west virginia university elected to put an end to the chesapeake energy capital classic following the mountaineers’ 86-68 victory on dec. 17, 2015, little did fans of the mountain state’s two division I basketball programs know that the 45th showdown between the two instate rivals would take place more than 2,350 miles from the charleston civic center.

But, thanks to their victories in the NCAA tournament’s east regional second round that is exactly what will happen at approximately 9:40 p.M.

Dan D’antoni’s thundering herd (25-10) got things rolling with an 81-75 upset of no. 4 seed wichita state (25-8) – MU’s first victory in NCAA tournament play.

Also known as the charleston capital classic and the toyota capital classic the state’s capital city became the series home for the two schools in 1992 with marshall snagging state bragging rights in 1996, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2011.

The tide turned in favor of the players of west virginia, however, with the mountaineers taking the last five contests to increase its overall edge in the series to 33-11.

Saturday’s win over the racers was a combination of great defense — WVU’s jevon carter held murray state’s jonathan stark, the ohio valley conference player of the year and the nation’s number 11 leading scorer with an average of 21.5 points per game, to only 12 points on 1 of 12 attempts from the floor and six free throws.West virginia

“I would be shocked if he didn’t play that way,” WVU coach bob huggins said. “he plays that way all the time. He plays that way in open gym. But he’s always done that.”

Carter and the mountaineer defense will get another test against a marshall team that received a game-high 27 points from jon elmore in its victory over the shockers.

“we like the journey we’re on,” D’antoni said. “we’re looking forward to the next leg, and I have confidence in these guys and that they’ll give you a real good ballgame and got a great chance to win.”

Obviously, the game will garner a lot of attention from fans in the mountain state. The ohio valley has three local athletes that will suit up as cameron graduate logan routt and wheeling central alum chase harler will represent west virginia while wheeling park’s phil bledsoe will represent marshall.West virginia

Routt’s play allowed huggins and his staff to sit star forward sagaba konate on the bench for longer periods of time because of foul difficulties.

Carter paced the mountaineers on offense with 21 points while adding eight assists and six steals to his career totals. Freshman teddy allen came off the bench to chip in 16 points while konate added 14 points, seven rebounds and a trio of blocked shots.

“he (allen) plays with a lot emotion which is good at sometimes,” harler said. “he definitely gave us a spark off the bench. Without him, I don’t know what the outcome would have been.”

Allen’s play as well as the rest of the mountaineer bench will be important if WVU is to advance to the sweet 16 for the second straight year and third in the last four.

“we have to take it one game at a time,” junior esa ahmad said.Fans mountain “we had to get the first one out of the way and get the win but now we have to focus on marshall.”

The thundering herd freshman is the son of former WVU standout guard jarrod west sr., who handed huggins’ cincinnati team a stunning loss with a last second shot. COMMENTS
