Do you remember where you were….. – the hull truth – boating and fishing forum about georgia state university

Sept 11, 2001….I was out for a bike ride on mccoy rd (parallels orlando int’l airport) and realized there was not the constant taking off/landing of aircraft. Just moved into a new condo and didn’t have cable hooked up yet, went to work at 3 pm and found out what had happened and saw the video for the 1st time.

Jan 28, 1986….Was a freshman at UF and was working at red lobster. Watching the countdown for challenger at the TV in the bar, when it got down to 30 seconds or so, went out into the parking lot to watch the lift off. Saw the bright dot leading the smoke trail into the sky when all of a sudden the smoke trail branched out…Went back in and saw the follow up on TV. Had to look up the specific date, but I do remember being a freshman in college, so I knew it was 1986.

March 30,1981….My dad ran his business out of an office attached to the house.

Came into the office from the outside and it was empty, which was odd….Walked into the house and his secretary was crying and I asked what was wrong and she just pointed at the TV…..The news of president reagan being shot was on. I was 12 at the time and didn’t really grasp the situation, that was the first major event that I have a clear memory/recollection of where I was when I learned of it. Had to look up the date, but I do remember the event.

On 9/11/01, I was actually in terminal B of logan airport, where 2 of the planes took off from. We were putting in a starbucks coffee kiosk and we left the terminal that morning just as it started getting busy with people after working all night. We had tools that we left in our tool boxes at the job site that were way more menacing than the box cutters that the terrorist used, including 18 volt cordless sawzalls and floor scrapers with 10 inch razor blades.

I remember that we checked out some of the pretty stewardesses and realized later that they may have been killed during the attack. The two terminals were no more than 50 yards past our work area, the terrorist had to walk right past us. We went back to our hotel across from the airport and got a call as we were going to sleep asking us what was going on. We turned on the tv and watched what was happening as we started to hear sirens outside. They would not let us get our tools out of the terminal for 3 days and they towed every car at the airport parking lot, they literally had every tow truck available running 24 hours a day for days.

We hung out and ate clam chowder, and we finally found a rental car that we drove home on friday morning "im in jacksonville FL" we drove through NYC, and DC and saw the smoke from both of the crash sites. Georgia college and state university nursing prerequisites I would also mention that some government agency brought about 50 computers into our hotel for something. They also set up in the lobby for people who had lost family members on the planes. We saw a couple of really sad scenes. One thing that has always struck me about that ordeal was the fact that is seemed like most of the people running security in logan airport were of middle eastern descent. I am sure there is more to mention but back to work for me.

Sept 11 2001 – I had just gotten to work at a gov’t contractor business. Rode a 2001 red triumph to work that day. They had us all go into the basement (shelter) once it was determined no more threat we were sent home for the day. Georgia state university motto I remember that ride home like it was yesterday.

Jan 28 1986 – wow I remember that very well. Probably no day will be in my memory more then that one. I was in an airport in FL getting ready to fly for the first time in my life. Leaving to go to basic training. Guy behind me, mcclare was his name, was the same. First flight going to basic. Seen the explosion on the monitors as we were in line to board. Almost didn’t get on that plane. I figured if the shuttle could blow up sure as hell a plane could too.

He and I wound up sitting in the same row on either side of a very kind and understanding old lady. I swear she held both of our hands until the plane was up to altitude. Funny as we were the ones going to train to be defenders of our country but we were scared shitless that day. Our MOS in army was artillery.

I’m sure there are some older members that may remember details of where they were or what they were doing for event such as president kennedy’s assassination, announcement to end of vietnam war, etc.If you already had the job at red lobster why continue going to UF?

I was 150 miles offshore in the GOM on a drilling rig at the end of my 4 week stay waiting for the helicopter ride back to shore. I had a flight home the next day. Helicopter was cancelled. I ended up getting a ride on one of the service boats that was at the rig that morning. About 10 hours later got to my hotel and called the airline…..Flight was still on schedule…..Called the next morning and it was cancelled indefinitely. I started calling all the car rental places in mississippi……No cars available. Called car rental places in mobile…After about 10 calls I finally found a car at the mobile airport. Georgia state university football 2013 took a taxi from pascagoula to mobile airport (not a cheap fare ~$200). The airport was on lock down and had a barricade out front. So I had to carry all my crap about a 3/4 mile to the terminal. Actually got the car and went to the first grocery store I ran into and picked up road supplies….Snacks, cokes and a cooler. Took of and little under 12 hours later I pulled into my driveway in lago vista TX…..Was never happier to see my wife and kids safe and sound….I can’t remember how much I paid for the one way car rental…But it wasn’t cheap! It was well worth the money spent to be home though for sure.
