The newspaper industry has been struggling in recent years as consumers continue to draw their information and entertainment from digital rather than print sources. Publishers have also watched advertisers focus on the internet rather than on print, further challenging their revenue.

According to freedonia, revenue fell from $47.5 billion in 2007 to $24.24 billion 2017. The fastest decline during this period took place in 2009, when the economic recession prompted consumers to cut discretionary spending. Many newspapers have pointed out that good journalism isn’t free, and that readers should have to pay for the content they produce. Some publishers have instituted paywalls, allowing readers a certain number of free articles each month. Paywalls have spread from major newspapers to smaller publications. But it also has another troubling effect: civic disengagement. The disparity between the age groups is pretty striking: only 5% of 18-29-year-olds got their news from a print newspaper, while nearly half (48%) of those at least 65 years of age reported doing so.
