Eligibility criteria for S.C. /S.T. Candidates for honours and general courses are as follows—provided the candidate can produce her/his original caste certificate as issued by the relevant/competent authorities of the govt. The college offers both honours and general B.A. Courses in philosophy. The honours courses include such diverse topics as principles of reasoning and argumentation, nature of mind, political and social structures, moral principles, nature of reality etc.

Studying philosophy leads to skill development through dialogue or argumentation and analysis. This gives students an edge in job examinations and interviews as well as at the workplace. Such job profiles include (but not restricted to) non-technical govt. Posts (e.G. Civil service), private sector (service industry), teaching, business (HRM) etc. The student also develops appreciation of different perspectives on the same issue which serves her well both at the workplace and in personal life.

The department has its own separate library. It has also started organizing talks by experts from other colleges/universities for the benefit of students. Students can also display their creativity by contributing articles/posters in the departmental magazine dristi.

The department of english offers the three-year undergraduate honours course in english literature, of the university of calcutta. The coursework consists primarily of reading and writing about literary texts, including poems, short stories, novels, plays and essays prescribed in the university syllabus.

Though we have to function broadly under the curricular guidelines set by the calcutta university and follow the syllabi set by it, we have evolved and applied case– and context– specific innovative practices in the implementation of this curricula. For example, we often organise our classes into smaller interactive groups with set-tasks to encourage independent thinking and creativity on the one hand, and develop the spirit of teamwork on the other. We also try to put students with better academic skills into leadership positions within the class. Our results reflect the overall outcome trends in our subject area. Though first class grades are very rare in english, we have had a fair share of them in our section over the years. Since english is largely used as a second language in india, lack of adequate language skills often hinder the progress of our students in the initial stages. Results improve in the second and the third years as language proficiency improves with practice. The department has, at present, two teachers in full-time posts, one teacher in a part-time post and two guest–lecturers. All our teachers have master’s degrees in english. Professor mou chatterjee has a phd and professor rajiv roy is pursuing phd research at the centre for social sciences, calcutta. The student-teacher ratio is approximately 1:10. Our teachers have a wide variety of interests and take part in various academic and extra-academic activities. Professor dr. Mou chatterjee has a keen interest in sports, choreography, music and dramatics. She always takes lead roles in organizing cultural and sports activities in the college. Professor rajiv roy, the current head, is the shift’s go–to person for all information and communication technology (ICT) related queries. He sets up and manages our departmental platforms on social networking websites. Professor sraboni chakraborty, an ex-student of this college, knows the pulse of this institution better than anybody else. Our current intake capacity is 56. Out of these 56 seats, 20 are reserved for students from various scheduled castes, tribes and other backward castes, in keeping with the reservation norms of the union and the state governments. Since english truly transcends class, caste or cultural barriers in india, we normally get students from a wide spectrum of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Though a large majority of our students are from the middle classes, we also, always, get at least a few from economically disadvantaged sections, who go on to avail various concessions and/or scholarship-schemes made available for them in the college.

Our students have always played prominent roles in the co-curricular activities of the college. Most of them go on to pursue higher degrees in universities both within and outside west bengal. Many of them are doing very well in various professions including teaching, journalism, fashion and interior designing, event management, choreography, aviation and advertising. Many are also currently preparing for competitive examinations for entry into various government services including the IAS. Our final year students often receive very good job offers in campus interviews organized by the career counseling cell of the college.
